                                    This evening's tyer:

                                                     Dale Burrier

I grew up on the South Shore of Long Island, New York and have been fishing as long as I can remember.  I started my fishing career in the salt, fishing for the local flounder, fluke, weak fish, bluefish and striped bass.  I picked up a fly rod in 1964 and have enjoyed fly fishing ever since.

I worked as a commercial clam digger putting myself through college and left New York with a Master’s degree in geology and went to work for Texaco in Houston.

In the Houston area I fly fished for redfish, flounder and speckled trout in the local bay systems.  I had done some fly tying as a kid but really increased my knowledge through the local fly fishing club in Houston.  I tied primarily salt water patterns.

After retiring and moving to Rogue River, my fly tying enthusiasm has been rejuvenated and I have immensely enjoyed our club.  Lots of fantastic fly tyers in the group with a lot of local knowledge to be shared.

I started Euro nymphing a couple of years ago and will be sharing a couple of patterns this evening.

There is a story behind the picture (of me age 14) I chose for this presentation.  You will have to join me on May 12th to hear, “The rest of the story.”

                                                              This evening's flies:

I have been tying for 50 years.  I have tied all types of dry, nymph and streamer flies.  After moving to Oregon 14 years ago, I concentrated on tying Steelhead patterns.  Over the past several years I have demonstrated fly tying at events across the country.  Recently I have been tying Classic Atlantic Salmon Flies.  I have been studying the masters such as William Blacker, Major Trahane and George Kelson.

Golden Girl

Created by Roderick Haig-Brown of British Columbia in the 1940s, the Golden Girl has long been a great winter steelhead pattern. I tie it in smaller sizes (#6-8) on fish it as a streamer for trout.

Hook: #2/0-8 streamer (or heavy steelhead hook)
Thread: Black
Tail: Orange hackle fibers
Body: Gold tinsel & Gold Oval tinsel
Underwing: Orange calf tail (or white)

Wing: Golden pheasant tippet feathers

Throat/Hackle: Orange hackle fibers (or yellow)

I will be demonstrating the Steelhead pattern and the Streamer pattern variations
