John has been tying flies for 57 years.  He hasn’t bought a fly in over 40 years and probably carries 250 flies when he goes out on the lake.  His one claim to fly tying fame is that he may be the only tyer       to have tied flies in the Gulf of Tonkin, which he did between flying missions into Laos off the USS Midway, CVA 41, in 1971.  Those flies actually got fished in Japan that same year while on liberty.

John will be tying:

 

The Bird’s Nest

Developed by Cal Bird in California in 1959 as a mayfly emerger




It is a great Callibaetis pattern

                                                                 

Materials Needed:
Hook: TMC 3761 or any 1xl  wet fly hook #10-20
Thread:  Tan or Wood Duck 8/0
Tail:  Mallard flank Dyed Wood Duck tied in the round

Rib: Counter wrapped fine Copper Wire
Abdomen: 50% brown Awesome Possum/50% brown rabbit or Superfine Callibaetis color Dubbing.   You can match the dubbing to whatever insect you wish…for that matter, you could use nearly any type of dubbing you like as well
Wing/Collar: Mallard flank Dyed Wood Duck Gold
Thorax: Dubbing to match abdomen.


CB Birds Nest – The Assassin

Materials Needed:
Hook: TMC 3562 or any 2xl  wet fly hook #10-20
Thread:  Tan or Wood Duck 8/0

Bead: Copper tungsten sized to the hook

Lead:  Five turns .015 lead or leadfree wire to stabilize the bead
Tail:  Mallard flank Dyed Wood Duck, tied in the round
Rib: Counter wrapped fine Copper Wire
Abdomen: 50% brown Awesome Possum/50% brown rabbit or Superfine Callibaetis color Dubbing.   You can match the dubbing to whatever insect you wish…for that matter, you could use nearly any type of dubbing you like as well
Wing/Collar: Mallard flank Dyed Wood Duck Gold
Thorax: Dubbing to match abdomen

Zack's Jigged Birds Nest


Materials Needed:
Hook: TMC 4640 60 degree jig hook #10-20
Thread:  Tan or Wood Duck 8/0

Bead: Copper tungsten slotted bead sized to the hook
Tail:  Mallard flank Dyed Wood Duck, tied in the round
Rib: Fine Copper Wire
Abdomen: 50% brown Awesome Possum/50% brown rabbit or Superfine Callibaetis color Dubbing.   You can match the dubbing to whatever insect you wish…for that matter, you could use nearly any type of dubbing you like as well
Wing/Collar: Mallard flank Dyed Wood Duck
Thorax: Dubbing to match abdomen, in a dubbing loop and pick out
