Hook              -           Daiichi 2110 #2 (Bomber Dry Fly Hook),

Thread           -           Black Uni 6/0 or Black Danville’s Flymaster,

Tail                 -           Purple Krystal Flash,

Tie in bump -           Purple UV Ice Dub (ICE298),

Foam             -           Black 5mm or 6mm closed cell foam w edge trimmed,

Legs                -           Round Medium Black Rubber Legs (2 ea. side),

Wing              -           Cream Poly Yarn,

Underbody   -           Purple UV ICE Dub (ICE298),

2^nd foam       

Tie in point -            3 eye lengths behind eye,

2^nd set legs   -           Round Medium Black Rubber Legs (2 sets ea. side),

 

Four key notes:

1.    Before placing first and second foam tiedowns, place a small drop of super glue down to prevent the foam from sliding around the hook shank.

2.    After placing the poly wing in, put a drop of super glue in at base of wing to prevent the wing materials from pulling out.

3.    After both wings are in, fly is finished, brush out wing and trip to desired shape.

4.    Trim front foam edge to semi-rounded shape.

Traditional Steelhead Flies ties with Ed Hass traditional winging method.  I will tie a Jim Pray Thor (first fly I caught a steelhead on in the Trinity River inCA ).  Then McBear’s Walnut Creek Special ( recently successfully used by Joe Knapick on lower river) and then a McBear’s Purple Walnut Creek Special. 

Thor: 

Hook: TMC 7989 or 7999 size 8-4,

Thread: Uni 8/0 black, 

Tail: Orange dyed Indian hackle,

Wing: Polar Bear Hair or white calf tail,

Body: Red medium chenille,

Hackle: Furnace softhackle, 5 turns,

Head: Black uni thread and 4 coats of varnish.

McBears Walnut Creek Special:

Hook: as above,

Thread: as above,

Tail: Red dyed Indian Hackle,

Wing: as above,

Body: Orange medium chennile,

Hackle: Light brown softhackle, 

Head: uni black thread with 5 coats of head cement.

McBears Purple Walnut Creek Special:

All as above except tail and Hackle are grizzly soft hackle and body is medium purple or claret chennile.

Due to the floor being redone at the facility, we need to move the date of the get together to Monday, April 2…

Dave McCants will tie this time and will tie the following flies, BWO cripple/emerger one light one dark, aka Quigley Cripple or something close to that that he uses on the Rogue River, quite successfully. 

Patterns are as follows and the photos are also below:

Light version - 

Hook -Daiichi 1180 size 14 -16,

Thread - Gordon Griffiths 14/0 gray,

Tails - 3-4 gray ostrich as long as hook shank,

Rib - 6/0 uni black or similar thread,

Abdomen - Mad River Beaver Dubbing BWO Gray,

Forward wing - very light to dun deer hair that is very fine,

Hackle - Light to med dun, three to four turns,

Head - tying thread whip finished with head cement.

Dark version:

Hook -Daiichi 1130 size 14 -16,

Thread - Gordon Griffiths 14/0 gray,

Tails - 3-4 gray ostrich as long as hook shank,

Rib - 6/0 uni black or similar thread,

Abdomen - Superfine Blue Winged Olive,

Forward wing - dun to dark deer with good light and dark tip that is very fine,

Hackle - Brown or medium furnace, three to four turns,

Head - tying thread whip finished with head cement.

October Meeting

     I hope that everyone has had a great summer, a little hot for me but nonetheless some good fishing was had on our local streams and lakes.  Especially true for me on the upper Rogue river, the holy water, and Medco Pond.

    We will miss Dave Hamilton, but part of his legacy is the tying sessions and the fly’s he shared with all the members of SOFT.  It would be nice to set up a group tying session and horror him by tying 2-3 of his favorite fly’s which I will speak with Cathy Hamilton about.

     This session I will lead and tie a new pattern modeled after Mr. Paul Wolflick’s black Carey Special he uses on lakes very successfully.  We will also do a second variation of this fly which attempts to solve the “short strike” issue I found recently on the holy water of the Rogue River.  On 3 successive trips I have swung this fly successfully (17 for 25 with 14-22 inch fish, 8 for 13 with 10-18 inch fish and, 7 for 12 with 11-18 inch fish).  I broke many fish off on 3x tippet and finally went to 2x and the fish didn’t seem to mind.  A friend also nymphed with this fly for an 18 inch fish, also on the holy water.

     Let us not forget to bring flies for the raffle, and any items you may wish to donate for our raffle.  We also will have a table up for any items you may want to give to others (the “I have too much stuff” let’s give some to somebody else who can use it}.

    Also this summer the club donated 6 boxes of flies to Water Watch for their fundraising activities.

    I look forward to seeing everyone and the meeting and please bring friends or anyone who would like to participate with our group.

June SOFT Meeting

Annual SOFT Dinner

Where: Madrone Hill Mobile Home Park, Conference Center,  8401 Old Stage Road, Gold Hill.

We are setting up our Annual BBQ /Potluck dinner for our June 13th meeting. Food and beverages will be provided and spouses and significant others are very welcome. As this has been a potluck in the past we ask that you let us know if you are planning to bring any side dishes and if not, what if any deserts or other interesting things you want to bring to share. 

We need to get a head count ASAP and we would like to know if you will be bringing anything so that we do not over purchase the main course / side dishes and beverages.

For those interested, during happy hour, I will show how easy it is to make hot glue eggs for those of us who enjoy nymphing.

SOFT Meeting, Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Mr. David P. McCants will tie two trout flies for the Rogue River (Holy Water and Upper Rogue).  These flies have been fished in multiple rivers in California and Nevada with great success.  The McCBear’s - Two Bobbin Baetis has also been fished by Mike Lawson on the Henry’s Fork with much success.

McCBear’s – Chorus Girl has also been used successfully on the same rivers and has landed a 28” inch rainbow on California’s Putah Creek (Dave’s former home water).
