SOFT Meeting, Tuesday, November 8, 2016

ATTENTION FLY TYERS

    The November meeting of the Southern Oregon Fly Tyers will be held on Tuesday, November 8th. Our featured tying demo will be done by Paul Wolflick from Roseburg. As always Paul will be showing us couple of his killer flies and some new techniques. Bring some flies for the club fly box to be included in the outstanding raffle items.

After the demo stop by the “TECH TABLE” for some useful hints on biots and how to get the best results.

No reservations needed, just show up with a friend or two and enjoy the evening with your fellow tyers.

NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED TO THE SOFT CLUB.

    At our October meeting the members elected a new President. Dave McCants will take over the leadership role from Dan Kellogg after he has served as President for the last 18 years. Dave brings to us many years of fly tying from the Bay Area along with plenty of new ideas for the club and lots of enthusiasm. If you haven’t met Mr. McCants attend the November meeting and get acquainted.

The B Fly

Materials:

·        Hook                    Tiemco 5262 #10

·        Thread                 6/0 Black

·        Tail                        Olive Marabou and Crystal Flash

·        Body                     4 strands Peacock Herl

·        Rib                        Gold Wire Fine

·        Thorax                 Ice Dub Golden Brown

·        Head                     Ice Dub Black Peacock

Directions:

1.      Tie in tail and 1 strand Crystal Flash alongside the tail.

2.      Tie in rib and ½ hook shank with peacock wrap.

3.      Rib body.

4.      Dub thorax.

5.      Dub head.

6.      Whip finish.

7.      Brush head and thorax to simulate legs.

Stillwater Caddis Emerger

Materials:

·        Hook                    Tiemco 5262 #12

·        Thread                 6/0 Olive

·        Rib                        Chartreuse BR wire

·        Body                     Diamond Brite Olive Brown

·        Wing Case & Legs  Brown Pheasant Rump

·        Thorax                 Ice Dub Peacock

·        Head                     Peacock herl

Directions:

1.      Tie in rib & dub body ½ hook shank.

2.      Rib body and tie in wing case and legs.

3.      Dub thorax.

4.      Pull wing case over thorax and form legs.

5.      Tie in head and wrap.

6.      Whip finish.

SOFT Meeting, Tuesday, October !!th

ATTENTION FLY TYERS!!! pm

The 2016/2017 tying season starts 6:00 pm on October 11th at the SOFT meeting in Gold Hill. We look forward to another great year of sharing the art with our fellow tyers in Southern Oregon and Northern California. It’s all about furthering our education and enjoyment of this very rewarding hobby.

 

Our first meeting will feature a tying demonstration by Dan Kellogg of the Gilled Nymph developed by Shane Stallcup to imitate the Callibaetis mayfly nymph so numerous in stillwaters and slow spring creeks of the Northwest. This pattern is a proven producer so you don’t want to miss this demo.

Ever wonder where certain duck feathers were located and what they could be used for? Dave Roberts will have his personal flock of waterfowl on display with the answers. 

Tom Collett will give a informative presentation on all the features and uses of our SOFT blog. It’s more than a meeting announcement so find out how you can use it to your advantage.

Through the summer we have had numerous suggestions about new programs and activities for our future meetings. We will be discussing and deciding on our direction, so bring your ideas, we appreciate your input.

We will have great raffle prizes and Kathy Hamilton informs us that she has plenty of tickets for everyone. Each month we will be raffling off one of our SOFT flyboxes. If each person brings a couple flies to put in, it will make the box even more valuable. Of course Dale will have his special coffee and I’m sure someone will bring goodies to share.

So invite your fly tying friends from the club and join us for an evening of learning and camaraderie. We always have a great time.

8th Annual North Umpqua Fishing - Tying Festival September 10, 2016 Glide

September means it's time for the 8th Annual North Umpqua Fly Fishing and Tying Festival, at the Glide Community Center, 20062 North Umpqua Highway, Glide Oregon.  Mark your calendars for Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th, volunteers, tyers and vendors are invited to a BBQ-Potluck on Friday evening, as a thanks for setting up and then cleaning up, plus all of the activities in-between.  Friday morning volunteers start setting up the Casting Pond and in the afternoon others start getting the community center organized.  By 5:30 the work is done and we are ready for to relax with good food, and friends at the BBQ.  

Doors open at 7am on Saturday for last minute setup, coffee and breakfast burritos. This year we have over 20 tyers from Oregon, Washington, California and Idaho, they will be working on Steelhead, Salmon, Realistic, Traditional and flies of their own invention.  Sessions are from 9-noon and 1-4pm.    They are willing to share the expertise, for the novice or more seasoned tyer and there is always a great story thrown in.  Local suppliers of tying and fishing equipment will have merchandise for sale.  Can you think of a better way to spend the day for anyone who fishes?  What about those who don't fish...we have something for them too.  Woodcarvers, watercolorists, jewelry makers and other artists will have their wares for sale.  Dan and Kelly Brock will have vintage and antique fishing equipment for sale and be available for appraisals.   John Mathews can paint flies on cars, boats, or RV’s for a most reasonable rate- what a great way to show your passion for fishing.   There will be raffles and door prizes  throughout the day,  terrific silent auction items to bid on and a new member raffle for those that sign up on Saturday.  Sandwiches and snacks will be available through the day.  The Community Center has a new HVAC system, so rain or shine  we will be comfortable.  

Accommodations in Glide are limited (one), but within 20 miles to the east and west there are plenty of options.

This is a great way to spend all or part of the day, spending time watching other tyers and learning a new technique, or visiting with friends.    Admission is free, but we are collecting non-perishable food items for donation to the Glide Helping Hands food Bank, and we make a donation to the Glide High School Scholarship Fund.   If you have questions about the festival, or volunteering contact Tresa.  541-496-0770 or tresa01@intergate.com

    We are putting on a BBQ dinner for our June 14th meeting. All the food and beverages will be provided  and spouses or significant others are very welcome. We only ask that you might bring a dessert or something interesting to share. We need your help ASAP to get a head count of those who will be attending so we have enough food for everyone.
